It's about time! Our clients have been asking for another alternative to selling their property through auction and neighborhood consignement shops so we've added an ebay option. Now our clients can easily set reserves on items they want more control over and can benefit from their proceeds quicker.
We list weekly on Ebay through one of our licensed online partners and usually run our auctions for 7 - 10 days. We research what we're selling and start the auctions at a low enough amount to encourage bidding to take place then allow it to build based on demand. We charge a set percentage of the selling price plus Ebay and PayPal fees. The buyers always pay shipping and handling. What we charge pays for photographing, researching, copywriting, packing and delivering items to be shipped. As you can see there's quite a bit of work that goes in to the process.
So....why do we do it?
Because it adds more value to the services we provide to our clients. We don't accept walk-in business and we're not a storefront for the general public. We don't list for anyone other than our own clientele. Plain and simply...if we believe we can do a better job for our clients by listing on Ebay and if that is their preference - that's what we'll do.
Auctioneers are important partners
Don't get us wrong, many times traditional auctions are still the very best route for high-end antiques and valuables.
SELLING VIA AUCTION:
When you sell via traditional auction the commission rates can vary from 10% to 40% of the hammer price of each item. Bear in mind, that's not cumulative, it's on an item-by-item basis. So for clients with a lot of low-end product the seller could be giving up nearly half of their proceeds. Now you might ask yourself if that's fair...I assure you, most of the time it is. It takes a lot of time to handle these items over and over again and it takes just as long to sell something for $20 as it does $1200.
Auctioneers are our friends and strategic partners who help keep product flowing in and out of the marketplace in an efficient manner. They often recognize the trends long before the general public and have a keen sense of what is hot and what is not!
Auctioneers are painfully aware that your perception of value may be quite different from reality - so don't be too quick to judge! The truth is things are only worth what someone else is willing to pay - no matter which route you choose.
SELLING VIA CONSIGMENT SHOPS:
We're often asked about consigning clothing, purses, jewelry and other types of personal accessories with neighborhood consignment stores. Opting for this route you'll find the commission rates are usually anywhere from 40-60% of the selling price. Again, keep in mind these storefronts have overhead just like the auction houses. They have to pay for storage space, electricity, help, etc. Trust me, it's not cheap to be in business, so we all help pay for the convenience of having someone else do all the work.
As long as you're willing to monitor your consigments and be pro-active about collecting your money or your property - if it doesn't sell, this is another alternative. Be sure you get some recommendations from others before entrusting your property to an unknown. You may be out your money and your stuff!

When we wanted to sell our beloved Steinway Upright piano in a hurry before the holidays Sheree offered to list it for us via her in-house Ebay Store. We told her what we wanted to net as a minimum and then she went to work. She researched other similar pianos and gave us a level-headed projection of what we might expect.
Within 10 days she secured a buyer and coordinated the pick up from our home.
We were thrilled at the response - and with a check for exactly what we wanted. She made it easy and quick to turn our piano in to cash!
